Detroit Food
Q:I noticed that you mentioned Detroit in your HipBites.
Can you forward me some good restaurant choices in Detroit?
I am trying to gather a few good spots for client lunch or dinners - mostly auto clients.
Also where do the White Stripes play?
And what's this place, Birmingham??

A:Ah, we don't cover Detroit, but you're so in luck because I was JUST there.

Congress is the "it" place right now.
I don't love it and it's nothing compared to what you will be used to as being "it" but people are nuts for it.

Small Plates is great for groups - it's tapas.
Harlequin is very entertaining but odd and creative (the owner seats you, pantomimes out the menu and then goes back and cooks your meal....) - this one is for your "fun" clients and when you have time for a long dinner.
I also hear good things about Cuisine.

Since your clients are out in the burbs probably:
The Lark in West Bloomfield
Tribute in Farmington Hills

If it's Big Dining you're after I would say
The Whitney.

People will recommend Opus One to you.
To me, that's more the Aging Socialites dinner set.

When I was in town The White Stripes were at The Lager House just chilling out, but I believe they play The Magic Stick.

Birmingham isn't actually Detroit proper - it's a suburb.
If you think of the city as heading out away from the river (which faces Canada and is where the GM Ren Centre is), you will head out and cross the "miles" (8 Mile is the city limit).
At 9 Mile you have Ferndale, where The Bosco is.
Next comes the burb of Royal Oak (young and post college-y).
Then you have Birmingham at about 14 Mile.
(Posh but a bit gentrified. Not what I consider "real" Detroit - which is the raw, gritty bits downtown.)

Have fun in Motor City
