Birthday AND Hay, ooo la la
Q:Queenie,

I'd like to take my guy out for a sumptuous birthday dinner out and, if he's nice to me, a roll in the proverbial hay after... Can you recommend a great restaurant and a hip hotel in the city?

-- "TS"

A:Do you mean in NYC or one of our 8 other cities? Oh dear.

Let's tackle the hay first.
No pun intended.

I'm going to assume you mean in NYC because that's where I am right now. (Yes the center of the earth moves along with me (big eye roll!))
The two most romantic hotels in Manhattan are:
Inn at Irving Place and
City Club.

The first because well, it's a country-esque B & B overlooking a private park but still in the city.
The second because the service is unparalleled and the staff discreet and kind.

As to dinner, I think if I were a boy (this is a stretch here), I'd like a meal at either The Bar at Etats Unis (it's way uptown and across from Etats Unis) - they make the best souffle and date pudding in the city. OR if your guy is a guy's guy, I'd go with steak. Old Homestead has atmosphere. Sparks is my favourite meat in the city. Or Michael Jordan's is fun if you're a tourista because the balcony is such a great view of everyone passing through NY.
