The concept here is an outdoor BBQ market (though you’re indoors) where you go up to various counters (one for BBQ, one for sides and one for dessert). The plus is this incredibly casual spot is like nothing else in NY. Down to the Blue Bell ice cream freezer, it’s a slice of Texas – and therefore a room of Texans – that makes you wonder how you sat through all those stuffy so-called BBQ places before. Don’t be fooled however. Despite the casual self-serve, it’s gonna cost you. At about $50 a person, there’s beef ribs, pork ribs, BBQ chicken, beer can game hen, brisket, on and on. We loved the sides, which come in handy paper containers that can be lidded to go. In particular, go for the Bourbon sweet potato mash, sweet corn pudding and cucumber salad. Now for the downside. Tips here must be terrible because this is an unhappy staff. Whether young, disgruntled or just plain poorly trained, management needs to be doing more for their workers. It doesn’t ruin a good time but suffice it to say, that service bit lends it a bit of the air of say a chain restaurant like an Applebee's.
