Not to be confused with the California chain, this midtown Chinese classic is always packed with a fussy upper crust clientele who mostly know Jimmy Chin by name. While celebs such as Drew Barrymore, Larry King and Mariah Carey have been known to pop in for Grand Marnier shrimp, diners tend to be societal type couples (the kind who never eat at home), Soprano-esque families having birthdays for their daughters and business folks who want to impress their dinner companions, both with the high end service and the high end bill. True to his roots, Chin Hin Kuen, Southern Chinese like Jimmy, turns out classics such as Singapore chow mai fun, shark fin soup, soong chicken in lettuce pockets and Hung Chiew chicken. All served up with a reasonable wine list and fun desserts such as Key lime pie (go figure). Quite frankly though it's what Americans think high end Chinese food should be, the large but not overwhelming menu has something for everyone with every dish being fresh, tasty and generous in portion size. We loved this place for the unpretentious comfort, attentive service, and a formula that we wish most restaurants would do - it's upscale without an ounce of arrogance.
