Brasserie Ruhlmann 45 Rockefeller Plaza on 50th Street 212 974 2020 Jean Denoyer’s Brasserie Ruhlmann is a hidden gem alongside Rockefeller Center. If you don’t like the casualness that brasserie has come to mean in NY, then this is the spot for you. Closer in feel (and food) to the traditional Paris original, this homage to the Art Deco designer Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann serves up endive salad, sole meuniere, grilled red snapper, oysters “Rockefeller” (of course), grilled boudin noir, classic pot- au- feu with marrow bone and winter veggies, skate Grenobloise, and choucroute royale with savory suckling pig, saucisse de Toulouse and garlic sausage under chef Laurent Tourondel who will surely make this THE place to be the way he did with the BLTs. An avid collector of Ruhlmann’s work for over 30 years, Denoyer (La Goulue, Orsay, Fizz in Manhattan; l’escale in Greenwich; Le Colonial in SF and New York), alongside Regis Marinier (La Goulue), Rick Wahlstedt (Japonais and Le Passage in Chicago) and Miae Lim (Japonais in Chicago) turned their collective expertise to recreate Paris’s Bourse neighborhood in the late 1920s. So far more a breakfast (where eggs can come with sevruga caviar, salmon roe or soft polenta) or lunch spot, this quiet spot makes for a great place to head to for eats after all those Fifth Avenue shop cocktail parties. |
