What a thrill it is to find Barna on this unexpected corner. Michael Dorrian, John Kekalos and Larry Roth’s (Suite 16, Dorrian’s) Spanish American spot in the Hotel Giraffe is neither pure nor too nouveau, but rather a nice blend of Latin eats, Latin music, and what else, random models wandering in from the nearby modeling agencies. We loved the lamb albondingas, seafood and chicken paella (it’s really more like a risotto with mussels), and orange calvados flan best. Other must-haves are the “biggest pork chop ever” – as we were warned – with fresh apple sauce and, in the desserts, the Spanish donut and Sohnos – cinnamon sugar fried dough. The spacious bar inside is great but it’s really the oasis of a roof deck (accessed through an elevator at the W.C.) that is this place’s best kept secret.
