Bombay Talkie

Sunitha Ramaiah’s lounge, named after the Bollywood movies: Bombay Talkies, which inspired her, is said to serving up Indian teahouse foods. Actually our first taste of her eats, we thought it was not quite the street food we’ve had - but much, much better. It was sometimes spicier and more interesting with subtle flavours – but diluted for the American palate. Perhaps eventually New Yorkers won’t require “nouveau Indian street food” but be ready for chef Subu Mukherjee's full thing. The 67 seat two story modern restaurant, designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen (who worked on 66 and Jean-George Vongerichten's apartment), showcases reproductions of movie posters of famous Bollywood scenes which surround the booths and a white communal table that has a view of a flat screen TV showing an endless procession of real Bombay Talkies – which they say, and we quote - will be played in “all their garish glory sans, thank God, the soundtrack (to which the heroine invariably dances, in the pouring rain -- the omnipresent and climactic dramatic devise inherent to all Indian movies, it seems.”) Brunch has a theme they’re calling The Return of the Raj: teas, tea sandwiches, pancakes, hams, fresh preserves….if not trickle pie. Sunitha ‘s family owns a tea plantation in the mountains of Niligri, India (guess what the house tea will be...) Best thing about this place is the late night (Wed- Sat 12 midnight- 2am, Sun- Tues 11pm- 1am) menu just a few stumbling blocks from all those Chelsea clubs.
