When we heard this spot was going to be about raw food, we thought: "Carpaccio! excellent!" Alas no, despite being right next door to the meat and innards-happy Casa Mono, Matthew Kenney, partner/ chef Sarma Melngailis, and Jeffrey Chodorow's new vegan restaurant doesn't serve any cooked food (nothing over 100 degrees), no fish and no animal products of any kind. (Actually no coffee or tea either) Redefining organic, the dishes here are surprisingly tasty. Cucumber rolls are fresh, subtle with great textures. Gazpacho is hearty and refreshing. The lasagna (a layer of marinated vegetables) is delicate. And the best dish, the coconut noodles has just the right amount of curry. In the old Verbena space, the new digs have a gorgeous outdoor garden and photographs of baby animals (lambs and ducks) all over thanking you for not eating them. Word to the wise: if you're allergic to nuts or lemons, this is not the restaurant for you as nearly every dish has both.
