Young folk don't stay at hostels during their gap year anymore. With the advent of such twee words as 'glamping', unless one is joining the Peace Corps, roughing it seems to mean not getting full access to one's trust fund. So where does the Gossip Girl generation go? They stay here. Like a giant airport hanger (complete with a Yobot downstairs to store your luggage), this mod space mostly features spartan rooms with so little space that the beds need to be electrically stored upright as couches (think "putting your seat in the upright position") and bathrooms are disguised with a little curtain. Each floor even comes with a dorm-style self-serve kitchen. To that end, the top end suite overlooking a construction site, even with its outside balcony space, priced around $1200 a night, seems a bit incongruous. After all, meetings are in pod- like glass rooms on the reception floor and the hotel brings in such indie- friendly, bargain- friendly festivals such as the 100 Under 2. But with the regular rooms starting at around $150/$199, this spot could drive Times Square spots to create a whole new price bracket. p.s. disappointingly, the hotel did not go with a YO! Sushi (the beloved British conveyor belt chain) but rather with a Richard Sandoval concept.
