The Gates 290 8th Avenue 212 206 8646 The old Biltmore Room is entirely changed over: in crowd. And what makes Danny Kane and Rod Surut's spot really entertaining is an endless parade of characters that almost makes us feel like it's the good old days of the 80s. On opening night, we saw: a guy in a Richard Simmons esque tank top paired with sequined leggings (nothing else); two non- twin grown men dressed as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum; a slew of women dressed as 80s matrons complete with mid-calf length 9-5 office skirts and fake leather purses worn cross body; a Norma Kamali- lookalike complete with leotard, red opaque tights in her hair with a matching red obi; someone channeling Jermaine Jackson with a velvet jacket and slicked on mustache; and an 80 year old Weimar singer in a sequined onesie. In our wildest imaginations, we couldn't come up with a more interesting crowd. Sure, there are the usual aged out gossip girls and smattering of models. And as any other good party spot, they've played host to StyleCaster, Fame Game, Lacoste, Cribs for Kids, Rosario Dawson, Salman Rushdie, but blah blah blah, who cares? What we like is the crowd of good old fashioned true originals. |
