This East Village salon, opened by Joey Silvestera in 2007, and named for illusionist Harry Blackstone, is hipster without being irritating. Recently expanded to nearly twice its size, it's still bijou- sized with just enough chairs to be interesting. The decor of white tiles and curiosity cabinets brings to mind turn of the century New York barbershops, an amalgam of Silvestera's life experiences who has been experimenting with hair since he was 13. Serving as the unofficial barber of his break- dance loving friends, he turned out the flat tops and geometric cuts of the 80s from his front porch. One taxidermy degree later (influeced by a childhood filled with hunting and fishing), the hair- loving Joey turned back to his first career, landing at Toni & Guy's. After expanding Mudhoney, he co- founded Beauty Parlour on the fourth floor of ABC Carpet & Home. Opening his own stand-alone spot in 2007, which expanded in 2013, Blackstones is filled with the history of grooming tools, such as old razors and blowdryers, and topped with fencing masks and taxidermy above, reassuring the clientele of an adequately cutting edge haircut. Unlike other salons that provide current magazines, this one keeps old books on hand so you can ask for a haircut inspired by a period. Want something historical or cinematic? They'll try to do that.
