Mission 217 Bowery 212 473 3113 Like Suite 16 but without the attitude. Although with some small interest in bottle service and covers, creating a bar where patrons had to pay a lot to party was not the, um, mission of Nicholas Cohen (former Shine man) and his partners (Holly Ferrari, David Casey, Andrew DeCourcey, Matthew Knott, and Philip Quilter), whose veteran sheet mostly includes low key places like the River Town Lounge. Indeed the best thing about Mission is the casualness of the Lower East Side combined with the decor of a snootier lounge. The lack of tension between the seated and the standing over bottle service and VIP was missing and that alone is a reason to spend your night in this spot. It was all about the diversity when we dropped in, with people of all ages, sizes and races doing everything from the pair on their first date to 27 year old ad boys looking to pick up to the married couple dancing vigorously to dance hall. Two DJs on two floors, lots of bathrooms (how novel for nightlife), Yuengling, a pod- shaped VIP room... Carmen Kass, Eva Herzigova and Jacquetta Wheeler have thrown a party as has Paper Magazine. |
