Café Wa s 1521 N. Vine Street 323 466 5400 The songs of Burt Bacharach?!?! Open till 2 a.m. for live piano covers of Radiohead and Oasis on a revolving 1924 Mason & Hamlin grand, yet also open for brunches with Burt tunes, Ivan Kane's Café Wa s is bohemian bistro, piano bar and date place all rolled into one. It's a strange, strange combination this club (from the creator of Forty Deuce and Deep) in the heart of Hollywood that offers everything from a partnership with The Greek Theatre and Gibson Amphitheatre to French fare done by chef Alex Reznik, who makes such dishes as crispy duck confit, coquille St Jacques and absinthe sorbet. Red velvet booths, black lace and velvet curtains, fringed table lamps, iron railings, and a mezzanine bar; this spot is so neo-opulent, one could stage a re-enactment of Lincoln's last night here. And yet it all works. At least for the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Dennis Hopper and Shia LaBeouf, all of whom have popped in. Promotions such as the Café Wa s Stimulus Plan (aka bottomless carafes of white and red table wine at $15 per person with your entree) don't hurt. |
