China Tang
Park Lane

We love love love this spot. It's like a piece of 1940s Shanghai. David Tang has thought of every detail. From the fixtures which he hand selected to the books in Chinese chosen for the private dining rooms to the waitstaffs uniforms, everything in here screams old China. Even the matchbooks look like the ones from the classic hotels on the mainland. Start with a sumptuous cocktail in the lounge for the full effect before you move on to dinner. This is the real deal. No faux fusion here, it's silky chicken breast, crispy suckling pig, clay pot specialties, and of course the requisite Peking duck. Veggies are as true to China as they can be (not everything can be imported though they certainly seem to have tried). Flavours are simple, clean and refreshing with ingredients shining through. Though reviewers before us have commented on the O.T.T. aspects, it's only because they've never seen the real deal like we have. From the heavy silver chopsticks down to the solicitous service, this is what the elite and wealthiest Chinese would expect from the very best restaurants back home and David has succeeded in capturing every essence of it in London. If price is no object, let the house choose for you - they have been trained to the nth degree and won't guide you wrong.
